Austin Kearns Signs One-Year Contract With Indians

The Cleveland Indians have had a slow offseason to date, being inactive in free agency and trade talks. On Monday, though, they made one minor addition, bringing back Austin Kearns on a one-year contract.

Kearns' deal is worth $1.3 million - a raise from the $0.75 million he made in 2010 as a member of the Indians and Yankees. The righty will serve as an outfield reserve behind Grady Sizemore, Shin-soo Choo, and Michael Brantley, all of whom are left-handed.

Kearns batted .263 last season with ten home runs and a .351 OBP after signing with Cleveland as a free agent. It was something of a return to form for the veteran, who struggled in 2008 and 2009. He’s capable of playing all three outfield positions, and is an ideal fourth outfielder, so the Indians will be happy to have him around again, even if he ends up getting traded.
