Andy Najar burst onto the national scene when he scored a 107th minute goal to help DC United beat Real Salt Lake in the preliminary round of the U.S. Open Cup. Since then, the 17-year-old has continued to impress.
Andy Najar Looks Like He’ll Be Around Awhile: Re-Signs With DC United
Najar scored five regular season goals and became the youngest player to ever win the MLS Rookie of the Year. He did it with a flair that is all too uncommon, especially among U.S.-based players.
Now, he's been rewarded with a new multi-year contract that should keep him in Black and Red for the foreseeable future. As always, exact terms were not released, but it's safe to say he'll be making significantly more than roughly $60,000 he reportedly made last year.
“Andy had a brilliant rookie season and is the most exciting young player in the League,” United General Manager Dave Kasper said in a team release. “One of our top priorities this off-season was to agree to a new deal with Andy that would both reward him for his contributions and secure his future with D.C. United.”
United is coming off one of the worst seasons in their history, having claimed just 21 points and posting a -26 goal difference. Najar, along with fellow Homegrown Player Bill Hamid, was one of the few bright spots. Combined with the recent acquisitions of Homegrown Player Ethan White and Dax McCarty, United appear to have a young foundation to build upon.
