Record-Setting FIU Baseball Player Garrett Wittels Charged With Rape
Now, Wittels is making headlines of a different kind. The baseball player has been charged with rape in the Bahamas, according to court officials in the islands’ capital.
The newspaper said Wittels’ father confirmed his son had been arrested in the Bahamas, where the 20-year-old FIU player and a group of friends were taken into custody last week.
Bahamian Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez said the arrests were made Dec. 20 at the Atlantis Resort Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas. Along with Wittels, Robert Rothschild, 21, Jonathan Oberti, 21, Steven Tromberg, 21, and David Shapiro, 21, all from Northeast Miami-Dade County, were booked.
The incident in question involve two 17-year-old girls who returned to the men’s hotel room. A source told the Sun-Sentinel that videos show the girls drinking in a resort bar and kissing each other before gesturing to the suspects to join them.
Wittels’ father has told The Miami Herald that similar video surveillance cameras will prove his son’s innocence.
Wittels and two of the other men were released on $10,000 bail after a court hearing on Thursday.
