The 7-6 Southern Methodist Mustangs and 6-6 Army Black Knights are rare sights in bowl season as of late, but there they are in the 2010 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl (TEN-HUT). The game will be played at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on SMU's campus in Dallas, and can be seen Dec. 30 at noon on ESPN.
Armed Forces Bowl, Army Vs. SMU: Two Bowl Prodigals Dealing In Dallas
SMU, a program you might remember from such short films as ESPN’s Pony Excess, make their second bowl appearance since receiving the NCAA’s death penalty for locking Craig James in a really, really nice storage shed. And Army hasn’t been to a bowl since the 1996 Independence Bowl, and hasn’t won one since the 1985 Peach Bowl.
If styles make fights, then here's the fight of the day. Army runs a run-heavy option offense led by QB Trent Steelman (TRENT-HUT) and RB Jared Hassin, ranking in the nation's top 10 in rushing yardage. Conference USA-runnerup SMU is 15th in the nation in passing, with QB Kyle Padron throwing for over 3,500 yards and 29 touchdowns.
