With the Pac-10 struggling to produce bowl eligible teams, the Sun Bowl reached outside it’s contractual obligations for an intriguing matchup. Instead of the traditional Pac-10, ACC matchup, the Sun Bowl features an even better rivalry this season. The 2010 Sun Bowl features the Catholics vs. the Convicts, the lovable rivalry name for Miami vs. Notre Dame. The 7-5 Fighting Irish and 7-5 Hurricanes hit the field in El Paso, Texas on Dec. 31 with the Sun Bowl title on the line.
Sun Bowl, Notre Dame Vs. Miami: Catholics Vs. Convicts In El Paso
Notre Dame battled inconsistency in 2010, dropping games to Tulsa and Navy before stringing together three-straight wins to end the season. The Fighting Irish finished strong, capping the season with wins over No. 14 Utah, Army and a rivalry win over USC.
The Sun Bowl will be the debut of new Miami head coach Al Golden. Following a 7-5 season, the Hurricanes relieved Randy Shannon of his duties as head coach following a 23-20 loss to South Florida in the season-finale. On Dec. 12, Golden, former head coach at Temple University, was given the keys to the Miami Ferrari and told not to drive it off a cliff. The Golden era, and Miami’s dream of returning to national prominence, begins on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas.
Catholics Vs. Convicts takes its show to the college football postseason on Dec. 31 at 2:30 p.m. EST on CBS.
