Hideki Okajima Re-Signs With Red Sox On One-Year Contract

Earlier in the month, the Boston Red Sox non-tendered reliever Hideki Okajima, making him a free agent. Now, on the final day of 2010, word's out that he's apparently re-signing with the organization.

According to Ken Rosenthal, all that stands between Okajima and a return to the Red Sox is a physical. After that, a one-year contract should be made official. Okajima was non-tendered because the Red Sox didn’t want to risk having to give him a raise from the $2.75 million he earned in 2010, so it’s probable that he’s signing at a fairly low cost.

The lefty Okajima will battle with other lefties like Rich Hill, Felix Doubront, Andrew Miller, and Lenny DiNardo for a bullpen job in Spring Training. Okajima struggled a year ago, posting the worst numbers of his four-year big league career, but the 35-year-old has held left-handed batters to a lifetime .214 average with a .591 OPS, and it stands to reason that he could bounce back to being an effective arm.
