John Fox Out As Head Coach Of The Carolina Panthers

In a move that's been expected for some time, the Carolina Panthers have announced head coach John Fox will not have his contract renewed, ending his tenure as head coach in Carolina. The Panthers suffered through a dismal season in 2010, compiling a 2-13 record through 15 games. For their efforts, the Panthers were rewarded with the top pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, given to the team with the worst record in the NFL.

Owner Jerry Richardson reached into the stock quotebook following the news Fox would not be retained as head coach, thanking Fox for his years of work in Carolina.

“I told John today that I appreciate everything he has done for us over the last nine years, but as happens in this business, it is time for both sides to move in different directions,” said Owner/Founder Jerry Richardson in a statement. “While we haven’t accomplished all of the goals we set as an organization when we signed him in 2002, we have certainly had our share of high moments - the Super Bowl, two NFC Championship games, and a division title in 2008. We wish John and his family the best going forward.”

Fox has a 73-72 record as the Panthers head coach that includes a Super Bowl loss in 2003. The Panthers made the playoffs three times in his nine years as head coach, but have fallen into a steady decline since their last playoff appearance in 2008. The following year, the Panthers were four games worse, at 8-8, before falling off a cliff in 2010.

None of Fox’s assistants will be retained and a coaching search will begin immediately. There’s been no word on potential candidates, but with the move expected for months, Richardson has a head start on the search.
