In today’s Monday Morning Quarterback, Peter King of Sports Illustrated wrote that he believes that Auburn’s Cam Newton will be a top 10 in the 2011 NFL Draft. That is, unless damaging information comes out about Newton.
Peter King: Cam Newton could be a top 10 pick

King says he “conceptually” talked about Newton to four NFL teams. The conceptual qualifier is because teams cannot talk about college athletes with eligibility remaining.
Two of the teams King spoke with said they would seriously look at Newton in the first round. One of the teams told King that teams are built with solid guys. So this is where Newton’s past transgressions can come back to bite him. Yes, they can be trivialized, but the issues are still there.
So, as King says, Newton has an asterisk next to his name. For me, it will remain there up until he gets selected.
