This may not just be the offseason of Cliff Lee and Zack Greinke. According to a report at ESPNChicago, the Tampa Bay Rays are listening to offers for young righty starter Matt Garza, with the Cubs heavily involved in discussions.
Matt Garza Trade Rumors Emerge With Cubs As Suitors
The report, from Bruce Levine, says that the Cubs and Rays have meet to discuss parameters of a trade that would send Garza to Chicago in exchange for a few of the Cubs' top prospects. While nothing is believed to be imminent, and while both the Brewers and Rangers have also checked in with the Rays, the Cubs are believed to have the best offer at this point in time.
In Chicago, Garza would join Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster at the top of the rotation.
The 27-year-old Garza made $3.35 million last season, throwing 204.2 innings while posting a 3.91 ERA. It was his fourth consecutive season with a sub-4 ERA, although his strikeout rate did drop from its impressive 2009 level. He is armed with excellent stuff, and still has another three years remaining of team control before he becomes a free agent after 2014.
