NFL’s Hunter Hillenmeyer To Donate Brain For Concussion Research

The obvious reaction by some Bears fans might be “What brain?”

↵But seriously, that Hillenmeyer and other current and former players have pledged to donates their brains to a Boston University study on brain trauma in NFL players can only be seen as good news. Still, it’s only a start.

↵On the one hand, it’s good to see that the league is aware that this game is very probably shortening the lives of its players, on the other, the league’s still pushing for a longer regular season, where those players to sustain even more hits. And this is the same league that lionizes the likes of Brett Favre and Kurt Warner for playing so long, while criticizing Tiki Barber for retiring at 30.

↵You may want to complain that the league’s rules on helmet to helmet contact, roughing the passer and horse collar tackles have made the game soft, but you do so by forgetting the toll this game takes on the players. It’s all part of an NFL culture that promotes these problems.

↵But what do I know? Hines Ward told me to not be such a wuss and get out there like a man.
