Eamonn Brennan over at ESPN.com (who used to roam these parts) has been blogging about St. Louis head coach Rick Majerus’ issues with the Billikens’ conference affiliation.
Three Seasons Into The Job, Rick Majerus Wants St. Louis Out Of The A-10
↵↵He’d like to be out of the A-10 and in the Missouri Valley, and he’s not afraid to tell the SLU powers that be. Again. And again. And again. Whether they’re listening -- and whether they’ll actually consider the move a viable option -- is another matter entirely.
↵↵In this whole discussion, a couple of pieces of information strike me as being missing from the conversation. St. Louis joined the Atlantic 10 for the 2005-06 academic year. Majerus replaced Brad Soderberg in time for the 2007-08 season, their third A-10 campaign.
↵Did Majerus not realize what he was getting himself into when he took the job almost three years ago? The Atlantic 10 had the same membership and travel issues back then, after all.
↵
It seems to me that Majerus -- who in 2004 resigned from the USC head coaching job five days after accepting it, when he realized that his health issues would prevent him from giving the program his all -- didn't do his due dilligence before accepting the St. Louis job.
↵Plus, a move to the Missouri Valley may be a true “be careful what you wish for” situation. Ben Jacobson seems to be building something special at Northern Iowa and Gregg Marshall is waking Wichita State back up. The travel would certainly be easier for the Billikens, but the basketball would be more of a grind, as the Valley’s four bid year of 2006 moves further into the past.
