With no acceptable offers on the table, Carlos Delgado may just end up retiring from baseball:
Carlos Delgado Considering Retirement
Delgado, 37, told the newspaper Primera Hora that he will be content to retire if no team offers him a suitable contract.
“I have to analyze all the options that I have and, another important thing, I’m not going to sign a contract just to say I signed,” Delgado said after a news conference in Puerto Rico, according to the newspaper. “You have to look for the best situation for yourself at the moment.”
Delgado appeared in just 26 games last season for the New York Mets before having right hip surgery. Delgado seems almost fully recovered, seeing time in the Puerto Rican Winter League this offseason, but hasn't fielded an offer that suits his needs. The Mets most likely will not re-sign the slugger, while he has also been linked to his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays.
Delgado is just one season removed from hitting 38 home runs with the Mets in 2008. If he is truly healthy, Delgado could give a power boost to a team that has room for him, potentially as a designated hitter.
