Historically, baseball fans count down the days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training. In Boston, though, there’s an earlier countdown: Truck Day.
Truck Day 2010: Bigger And Better Than Ever
↵What is ‘Truck Day’ you ask? It’s only the greatest day ever between the Hot Stove season and the start of spring training: it’s the day a large truck hauls all of the team’s equipment from Fenway Park down to their spring training site in Fort Myers, Fla.
↵Truck Day for the Red Sox is actually tomorrow. And yes, there will be plenty of Red Sox fans lining up on Van Ness Street to watch the truck load up and depart. Sound boring? You’d be surprised, actually. It’s really a lot of ... no, it’s definitely boring.
↵But Truck Day isn’t so special anymore for Red Sox fans. Now there are other pro teams jumping on the Truck Day train (or should I say ‘truck’?):
↵↵This year, at least a half-dozen teams have Truck Day events, MLB.com reported. They include the Mets, the Cubs, the Indians and the Royals, although their size and scope appears to differ quite a bit.
↵It’s possible that other teams have similar events in recent years. But there’s a strong likelihood here that other teams have noticed that the Red Sox had a good thing going and wanted in on the action. After all, the event appears to be easy and cheap to run and builds buzz a solid week before spring training begins in earnest.
↵↵But will the Royals have Wally the Green Monster throwing out free t-shirts to the crowd? Didn’t think so.
