Women’s Hockey: USA Secures Spot In Semifinals With 13-0 Win Over Russia

The US Women’s Hockey Team has put up a baker’s dozen on the Russians, and with the win have secured a spot in the semifinals. American Jenny Potter scored her second consecutive hat trick and the Americans broke the Olympic record with seven power play goals.

The US out-shot the Russians 34-7, 32-4 in the first two periods, and ultimately went seven for eight on the power play. They next face Finland on Feb. 18.

The United States women have set an Olympic record with six power play goals as they have scored an even dozen goals against Russia through two periods. Jenny Potter has another hat trick while Natalie Darwitz has two goals and Karen Thatcher, Monique Lamoureaux, Kelli Stack, Jocelyne Lamoureaux, Angela Ruggerio, Caitlin Cahow, and Molly Engstrom each have scored one goal.

The US is outshooting Russia 32-4 through two period and is six for seven on the powerplay. With one more period left, the US just needs to finish out the game as they will already be heading to the semifinals no matter the outcome of their game against Finland

While the U.S. men received all of the attention today, the U.S. women continue their hopeful gold medal run as they take on Russia in round-robin play. The United States started off with a big win over China on Sunday, as they work to build their play up and work on not looking ahead to Canada. Team USA was surprised by Sweden in 2006, and they will work to maintain their focus game by game.

Jenny Potter, veteran co-captain of Team USA, was in top form against China and leads a potent offensive attack that is bolstered by the scoring prowess of Julie Chu and the Lamoureux sisters.
