Various media folks are weighing in on the future of Saints S Darren Sharper and it seems no one can agree on what they'll do to keep the unrestricted free agent.
Conflicting Reports Emerge On Future Of Saints S Darren Sharper
Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune said he “can’t see the Saints franchising a 34 year old safety” in a February 10th tweet.
Two days later, Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com reported that Saints officials have already said they won’t use the franchise tag on Sharper. Pasquarelli goes on to suggest that the Saints would be willing to talk about a multi-year contract considering his impact on the Saints defense.
On Monday conflicting reports regarding Sharper’s future began to emerge.
Steve Wyche of NFL.com reported that he’s “hearing” the Saints will franchise Sharper and ESPN’s Adam Schefter also suggested the Saints are giving serious thought to using the tag.
So what’s the deal?
Perhaps the Saints are starting to realize the public backlash that would come from releasing Sharper on the heels of a Super Bowl victory.
While we don’t doubt the Saints want to keep Sharper -- and Sharper wants to stay in New Orleans -- the likelihood of the Saints giving him over a 300% pay raise is unlikely.
The Saints have until February 25th -- the last day to utilize the franchise tag -- to make a decision.
