Raiders Sign Sebastian Janikowski To Richest Kicker Contract In History

The Oakland Raiders sure like to spend whatever money they've got. Unfortunately, they tend to spend it in the wrong places. This time, however, they rewarded one of the best players in the NFL.

The Raiders made Sebastian Janikowski the highest paid kicker in NFL history, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal spans four years and includes $16 million. Schefter reports $9 million of that is guaranteed.

It's easy to see "kicker" and "richest contract in history" and laugh at the Raiders but this is actually a good move on their part. With a combo of Charlie Frye and JaMarcus Russell leading the offense, it's a rare occasion for them to pass mid-field and when they do, they need a kicker who can consistently hit 50+ yard field goals.

Janikowski was scheduled to become a free agent in March and a few folks speculated he could be given the transition or franchise tag.

The Raiders now still have the franchise tag available for Richard Seymour.
