Christine Nesbitt Claims Gold For Canada In Women’s Speed Skaing 1000m

Christine Nesbitt claimed Canada’s first speed skating title and third overall gold medal of the Vancouver Games by winning the women’s 1,000 meters with a time of 1 minute, 16.56 seconds.

Nesbitt edged silver medalist Annette Gerritsen by just two-hundredths of a second, closing the half-second gap between the two skaters at the 600-meter mark.

The bronze medal also went to the Dutch, as Laurine van Riessen finished in 1 minute, 16.72 seconds, edging Canadian Kristina Groves by just six-hundredths.

Jennifer Rodriguez, who won two medals in Salt Lake City eight years ago, was the top American finisher. She finished seventh, while Heather Richardson finished two spots back.
