With their 5-2 win over Latvia on Friday night, the Czech Republic have taken control of Group B heading into their showdown with Russia on Sunday night. The Czech Republic has six points in their first two games while Russia only has four thanks to their overtime loss to Slovakia.
Czech Republic 5, Latvia 2: Czech Republic Takes Control Of Group B
Five different players ended up scoring for the Czech Republic: Tomas Plekanec, Patrik Elias, David Krejci, Jaromir Jagr, and Tomas Kaberle while Marek Zidlicky ended up having three assists. The goal scorers for Latvia were Girts Ankipans and Kristaps Sotnieks.
The Czech Republic outshot Latvia 39-18 and capitalized on two of their nine powerplays while Latvia converted on only one of five. Tomas Vokoun was the goaltender for the Czechs, making 16 saves on the 18 shots while Edgars Masalskis made 34 saves on 38 shots.
As mentioned before, the Czech Republic will take on Russia for what appears to be a spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday while Latvia will take on Slovakia on Saturday night.
