U.S. Women’s Hockey Advances To Gold Medal Game With Win Over Sweden

In 2006, Sweden completed the biggest upset in Women’s hockey history with their win over the United States in the semifinals. In 2010, the United States avenged that loss with a 9-1 win over Sweden on Monday, securing their spot in the gold medal game.

Forward Monique Lamoureux had a hat trick, while Karen Thatcher, Meghan Duggan, Kelli Stack, Angela Ruggiero, Caitlin Cahow and Kerry Weiland all had goals as well. Only five players on the U.S. roster did not register at least one point. For Sweden, forward Pernilla Winberg was the lone goal scorer while Isabelle Jordansson registered the assist.

In 2006, the United States outshot Sweden 39-18 and converted on two of nine power play chances. In 2010, America converted on three of five chances and outshot Sweden, 46-12.

The United States will face the winner of the Canada/Finland game that will be played on Monday night, while Sweden will face the loser of that game for the bronze medal.
