The United States claimed their second silver medal of the Nordic Combined competition at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday afternoon, finishing behind Austria in the 4x5-kilometer relay at Whistler Olympic Park.
U.S. Wins Silver In Nordic Combined Team Relay, Austria Sneaks By For Gold
It was the second ever Nordic Combined medal won by the U.S. in the Olympics. Johnny Spillane took silver in Men’s Normal Hill 10km on the third day of the Vancouver Games.
The Austrian anchor, Mario Stecher, took advantage of a stumble by American Bill Demong at the final turn before entering the stadium. Stecher pulled away, to give the Austrians gold, with a time of 49 minutes, 31.6 seconds, 5.2 seconds ahead of the Americans. The relay race took place after team ski jumping earlier in the day.
Germany rounded out the podium, claiming bronze by finishing 19.5 seconds behind the winners.
