Russian anchor Olga Zaitseva led her team to a gold medal in Tuesday’s women’s biathlon relay at Whistler Olympic Park.
Russia Tops France, Germany In Women’s Biathlon Relay
The victory gave Zaitseva her second medal of the Winter Olympics and a bit of revenge over bronze medalist Germany. Zaitseva finished in silver medal position between two German biathletes after Sunday’s mass start event.
France looked to be in charge of the race, until Marie Dorin missed five of her eight shots during the third leg. She had to ski two penalty laps, and Russia’s third, Olga Medvedtseva, took advantage.
Sveltana Sleptsova praised the large number of Russian fans present in Whistler for their support.
“We were overwhelmed, the entire stadium seemed to be covered in Russian flags,” Sleptsova said. “Our spirits soared, and that gave us strength.”
Sandrine Bailly passed German Andrea Henkel near the finish, giving France the silver.
The United States finished 17th out of 19 countries in the event.
