The latest trade talk story making the rounds is about Jacksonville wanting to trade out of its pick – whether that ends up being 10 or 11.
Jaguars targeting trade, talent on defense
Jacksonville wants to acquire more picks after trading this year's second rounder to select cornerback Derek Cox.
But the most interesting part of this story is being buried. It is general manager Gene Smith saying this:
“I hope we can match best available player with some areas on defense where we need improvement. There’s a good likelihood we might be able to do that.”
Everyone figures Jacksonville to take Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan. He would help improve the league’s worst pass rush. But there’s no guarantee he’ll be available. What if some team jumps ahead of Jacksonville to take Morgan?
If you assume Morgan is gone, perhaps to Seattle with the sixth pick, what then? Jason Pierre-Paul is a possibility, but the Jaguars may not be able to take a risk on a boom or bust player. So unless Jacksonville can manage a trade down, they may have to settle on someone.
