It’s long overdue at this point, but the NFL and Major League Baseball are both looking to implement new testing programs that would detect human growth hormone in players.
MLB And The NFL Looking To Crack Down On HGH, Jayson Werth’s Beard
↵First, on the MLB front, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Bud Selig plans on testing minor league baseball players for HGH, the first step to eventually testing Major Leaguers. From the MLB:
↵↵“We are consulting with our experts concerning immediate steps for our minor league drug program and next steps for our major league drug program. The commissioner remains committed to the position that we must act aggressively to deal with the issue of HGH.”
↵↵As for the NFL, the Washington Post reports that the NFL is looking into implementing HGH testing. Like baseball, it’s a move that would likely encounter staunch opposition from the players’ union--the union maintains that the blood testing required for HGH testing is too invasive to make mandatory.
↵Given the opposition, it’s safe to say any meaningful testing programs are a ways off at this point. But it’s a start. In all sports, Human Growth Hormone has been the elephant in the room for years now. Publicly acknowledging the problem is at least step in the right direction.
