What did Major League Baseball have over Home Depot, Starbucks and Disney in 2009? It’s didn’t take a sucker punch from the economy and, actually, threw a few punches back:
MLB: Recession? We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Recession
↵↵According to information provided to The Biz of Baseball by the league, gross revenues were $6.6 billion for 2009, a record figure for MLB. The figure is a 1.5 percent increase the $6.5 billion pulled in for 2008.
↵The increase of revenues comes against the backdrop of MLB seeing a decline in attendance this past year. While still the fifth highest on-record, MLB saw a total paid-attendance figure of 73,418,529 for 2009, a decrease of 6.58 percent from a total of 78,591,116 in 2008.
↵↵Not too shabby for baseball and Mr. Bud Selig. It seems that the MLB is on a good track as of now: even if ticket sales are similar in 2010, the MLB could still see an increase on that $6.6 billion number. If ticket sales continue to drop, they could still make a small gain. For the sake of baseball -- and the United States -- let’s hope this whole “economy” thing rounds itself out this year.
