Sunday NFL Scouting Combine ruminations, open thread

The NFL Scouting Combine is really in full effect today with quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Yesterday, I dismissed the dazzling combine showing by Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell. One Terrapin fan dropped this doozy in my inbox last night:

Bruce Campbell is an athlete freak! If you can’t understand taht, u need to stop bloging. he’s a top 10 lock now! fear da turtle!!!!

OK.

While I consider offensive linemen running and jumping being mostly worthless, it’s not so for today’s participants. Today is where a bunched up group of wide receivers and running backs can separate themselves.

For the quarterbacks, this is where players like Jevan Snead, Tony Pike or Sean Canfield can make a lot of money. There will be Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow or Dan LeFevour. So there is an opportunity for a quarterback to steal the show. And don't be surprised if it happens.

By the by, LeFevour may participate in some drills.

This is a day for players to step up. 3k from Turf Show Times breaks some of them down.

Along with the players he mentions, I’d also include wide receiver Mike Williams of Syracuse. He quit the Syracuse football team in November and has become somewhat of an unknown commodity.

The combine runs all day today on the NFL Network. Discuss your findings in this thread.

Other notes:

• Oklahoma State’s Russell Okung tweaked his groin on Saturday. That’s why you didn’t see him participating in all drills.

• Tony Pauline of TFY Draft and Sports Illustrated gives his offensive lineman and tight end risers and fallers.

Jimmy Clausen played through pain, pain killers.

Battle Red Blog at the combine: I’m really tired of this place.

• Non-combine: NFL considering overtime rules change.

• Very good Q&A from Dan Williams.

This player should be a plug-and-play replacement for Mekhi Becton right off the bat.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
