Penguins Will Have Trouble Getting To Washington D.C.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in Montreal today, taking on the Canadians. According to the NHL schedule, they’re supposed to be in Washington D.C. tomorrow at 12:00 to take on the Capitals. One quick look at conditions in the Nation’s Capital will tell you they’re going to have a difficult time getting there.

↵All three airports in the region -- Reagan National, Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International -- have canceled all flights on Saturday.

↵Scott Morrison of Hockey Night In Canada is reporting that the Penguins may fly in to Richmond International and bus their way to D.C., a two-hour ride through the biggest storm to hit the region in close to 90 years.

↵It’s clear that the league and NBC want to get the game in. It’s been hyped all week as ‘Ovechkin vs Crosby, Round II’ and the network no doubt began salivating about a potential ratings bonanza when the numbers were announced from the first meeting between the two teams. That game on January 21 picked up a 3.2 rating in the Washington market and an absurd 10.85 rating in the Pittsburgh market.

↵With those numbers, NBC might force the Penguins to walk from Montreal, if it comes to that.

↵UPDATE -- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that the Penguins will fly from Montreal to Newark, NJ where they will then board a bus for the four hour drive to Washington D.C. Well, that’s a four hour drive in safe, clear conditions minus traffic. It’s safe to say that it’s going to take a lot longer than that in current condtions.
