The IIHF has released the pre-Olympic rankings for their both men’s and women’s hockey. On the men’s side, Russia is leading the rankings with a total of 2,925 points followed closely by Canada in second and Sweden in third. For the women, the United States lead Canada and Sweden.
IIHF Releases Pre-Olympic Rankings
↵The IIHF uses a four year rolling point system that assign points to all of the World Championships and the Olympics. For the pre-Olympic rankings, the 2006-2009 World Championships are considered for the combined point ratings. The IIHF will release a post-Olympic ranking that will include the Olympics in their calculations.
↵All this really means is that the Russians have been playing really well in the past few years. Since the rankings look at past performance, they aren’t really a precursor to the current games.
