All things considered, Charlotte should be pretty happy with a 19-12 season, especially since it’s expected to return four starters and its three top scorers next year. However, Charlotte’s wasn’t as thrilled, because they surprisingly fired long-time coach Bobby Lutz today.
Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com was the first with the news and added that Lutz and his staff (who were also let go) were shocked by the news.
The Charlotte staff, according to sources, was shocked. Won 19 games and had just about everyone back next year.
Perhaps the Charlotte brass was displeased with the way the 49ers finished the season. They started the season 18-5 and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10, with wins at Louisville, at Richmond and at home against Temple. However, they finished the year by losing seven of their last eight games, including an embarrassing loss to lowly Umass in the first round of the Atlantic 10 tournament. The University press release linked above made sure to note the team’s season-ending collapse.
The 49ers went 19-12 in 2009-10 and finished in a tie for fifth-place in the A-10 with a 9-7 record. Charlotte lost seven of its last eight games to fall out of A-10 Championship contention and post-season play.
Lutz had been with the 49ers for the last 12 years, where he made five NCAA Tournament appearances and three NITs.
