As expected, Iowa athletic director Gary Barta announced the firing of basketball head coach Todd Lickliter at a press conference on Monday afternoon, according to CBS Sports. Lickliter did not attend the press conference or make himself available for comment.
Iowa Fires Basketball Coach Todd Lickliter
Lickliter went 38-58 in his three season in Iowa, in a tenure marred by suspensions and transfers. After losing four players to transfer preceding this season, Iowa fell to a 10-22 mark, the first 20-loss season in school history. The Hawkeyes finished 4-14 in the Big Ten, including lopsided defeats to Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as an early round loss to Michigan in the Big Ten tournament. Iowa’s usually stellar attendance collapsed this past season, perhaps making a move of some sort inevitable.
Lickliter previously coached at Butler, where he guided the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances and a bevy of 20-win seasons, before coming to Iowa to replace current New Mexico coach Steve Alford. Lickliter had four years left on his original contract with Iowa.
