Seeing an opportunity to get themselves into the thick of the race in the AL West, over the offseason the Oakland A’s signed ex-ace starter Ben Sheets to a $10m contract. And today, making his third start of the spring, Sheets recorded as many outs as he did in 2009. Which is to say, zero.

↵↵Sheets didn’t retire a batter - although Mark Ellis did flub a grounder by Aaron Miles - and the Reds scored 10 runs, nine earned while he was on the mound. A two-run homer by Chris Dickerson chased Sheets, whose spring ERA is over 31.00.
↵↵Following his appearance, Sheets made mention of a spring start he made against the Angels in 2002, when he allowed nine consecutive hits. Sheets would go on that year to post a 4.15 ERA over 34 starts. Still, while one start is one start, and while March is March, a fan would generally prefer his eight-figure ace to not let all ten of the guys he sees score, so some degree of concern is warranted.
