After a 13-year partnership, the University of Oregon has decided to fire head basketball coach Ernie Kent, according to a report from FOX Sports.
Report: Oregon Set To Fire Men’s Basketball Coach Ernie Kent
Sources say that the official announcement will come at 6:30 p.m. ET, and that Kent has already informed his team of the news.
The Ducks finished the 2009-2010 season with a 16-16 record and were not invited to participate in either the NIT or the CBI. Given Oregon’s 8-23 finish the year before, the decision to fire Kent was virtually inevitable. This was Kent’s 13th season in Eugene, where he amassed a 235-173 overall record.
The news would hardly come as a surprise to SB Nation’s Oregon blog, Addicted To Quack:
... Ernie Kent and [Oregon athletic director] Mike Bellotti will meet this morning to discuss this year’s performance. I expect official word on Kent’s firing to follow shortly.
Bellotti has been quite busy dealing with the various problems associated with the Ducks’ football team of late. Now, he must shift his attention to finding the school’s first replacement basketball coach since the 90’s.
