Brandon LaFell
6’2, 211 pounds | Wide receiver | LSU
Acceleration: Possesses a good short-area burst but doesn’t have the kind of deep acceleration some teams desire. Accelerates easily and doesn’t waste a lot of motion.
Agility/Leaping ability: Is a disciplined leaper who high points the ball really well. May not be the highest leaper, but his timing is excellent.
Blocking: This is where LaFell’s toughness really shows. He gets after defenders and can be a powerhouse. LaFell shows good footwork and can be a real asset here.
Brandon LaFell NFL Draft scouting report
Body Control/Ball Adjustment: This is what really elevates LaFell. He knows how to use his large frame to properly position himself to make a catch.
Concentration/Hands: Shows good hands, but not great. Almost always catches away from his frame. Where LaFell needs to improve is keeping his eye on the ball through its completion. Too often he looks up field before securing the ball.
Release: Knows how to use his strength to get off the line. Also has the foot quickness to get a release and doesn’t take false steps at the line.
Route Running: LaFell is a solid route runner but has to become more disciplined. He rounds off too much and has to become more sudden in his movements.
Size/Length/Hand size: Is a large wide receiver with good bulk. Won’t have to worry about getting bigger. If he does, it could make him even slower. Has long arms.
Speed: LaFell doesn’t have the kind of deep speed to beat good man coverage, so he’ll never be a great vertical threat.
Vision: Gets up field quickly after making the catch. Has the power to break tackles for extra yards. Shows the vision to set up blockers. Doesn’t have the speed to break away or the agility to juke opponents in the open field.
Final word: LaFell should be a very solid wide receiver at the next level. He doesn’t really have the ceiling of a No. 1 target, but he’s dependable and strong. Picked in the right scheme, he can be an excellent choice as a receiver.
Had solid production throughout his career playing in 51 games. Finished with 175 receptions for 2,517 yards and 25 touchdowns.
