Villanova: Where A Minor Teaching Point Could Lead To A Major Problem

Before today’s game against Robert Morris, Villanova coach Jay Wright made a decision to bench his two leading scorers - Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher - for what he called a “minor teaching point.” Who knows what it actually was, but a game against Robert Morris seems like an appropriate time, since Villanova probably wasn’t going to lose anyway.

↵Well ... not so fast. We’re at halftime in Providence, and “Bobby Mo” has led pretty much the entire half, putting together a 14-2 run at one point. They lead by six at the half and are completely outplaying Villanova on both ends.

Meanwhile, Reynolds is struggling. He's 0-5 from the field with two turnovers after coming off the bench four minutes into the game. The problem? He's completely out of rhythm. It's not just that he's 0-5, it's the kind of shots he's taking. They're all contested and rushed. Clearly, the benching has hurt him, and by extension, the team.

↵Then again, it is just six points, and Villanova was down 14 to American in the first round last year before rallying and making the Final Four. But if you’re looking for an upset today, you better click this video and follow the finish.
