The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Niko Houllis, lead blogger at SB Nation's Tampa Bay Buccaneers blog, Buc 'Em, checks in to make the third overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 3
With the third overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected Gerald McCoy, defensive tackle, Oklahoma.
Niko Houllis says: The Choice of Gerald McCoy is a simple one. The Bucs were worst in the league against the run last year, and have not consistently rushed the QB since the departure of Warren Sapp in 2003. With head coach Raheem Morris a member of the defensive coaching staff since the Super Bowl years, he began running the defense in the same one-gap system the Tampa 2 always has used last year after Week 10. He will continue to run the defense in 2010, and McCoy is a perfect fit, as he is a three-technique DT who can line up on the guard's shoulder and penetrate into the backfield like Sapp used to. Pressure from the front four only without blitzing is a requirement of the Tampa 2 system.
Mocking Dan reacts: The same explanation given for Detroit could be given for Tampa Bay. The team needs defensive line help, and McCoy should quickly become a starter. McCoy does have some similar playing traits to Sapp. But it’s his mental makeup that is so impressive. He won’t go to Tampa with a big head and is a true team player.
Mocking the Draft’s Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Eric Berry/S/Tennessee, 2 - Russell Okung/OT/Oklahoma State, 3 - Rolando McClain/MLB/Alabama, 4 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 5 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech
