The second pick is in and SB Nation’s Lions community, Pride of Detroit, has selected...
2010 NFL Mock Draft, Pick 2: Lions Select Ndamukong Suh, DT Nebraska
Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh
The Lions have already added defensive tackle Corey Williams via a trade with the Browns and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch via free agency. Adding Suh would not only give Lions fans great faith in the defensive line, but it would be another step in overhauling the entire defense and continuing to add talent to the team.
The addition of Suh would complete Detroit’s revitalization of its defensive tackle rotation. He projects as an immediate star and will be a difference maker for Detroit. This is the obvious choice, and a good one.
From Corn Nation’s Suh player profile:
Suh would be effective in the 3-4 as as end, but a waste as a nose tackle. He doesn’t have the bulk, and it would be a waste of his speed. He’d be better off as a defensive tackle in a 4-3. He regularly dominated games as a senior, despite being double-teamed in every game. His hits were vicious, as was his ability to quickly recognize plays. This is probably the right pick but there’s another side of me that thinks they could have gone another direction.
The Lions overhauled their defensive line, as POD notes, so their need for a dominant defensive tackle wasn’t as dire as it was prior to free agency. In addition to that, the Lions just invested $41 million guaranteed into QB Matt Stafford and they’re going to protect his blind side with....Jeff Backus?
With that said, Suh is a “can’t-miss” prospect and defensive tackles don’t come along very often so it’s hard to argue with it.
