Rhode Island 79, Virginia Tech 72: Rams Moving On To Face UNC At Madison Square Garden
Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Delroy James tallied 18 points and the Rhode Island Rams topped the Virginia Tech Hokies, 79-72, in a quarterfinal-round matchup of the 2010 NIT at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.
James also had six rebounds and four blocks for URI (26-9), while Lamonte Ulmer and Akeem Richmond checked in with 13 points apiece. With the win, the Rams are now headed to Madison Square Garden in New York City for next week’s semifinals matchup versus North Carolina, which defeated UAB on Tuesday night.
Malcolm Delaney led the Hokies (25-9) and all scorers with 24 points on 5- of-17 field goals and 12-of-13 free throws. Dorenzo Hudson added 19 points, while Jeff Allen registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the losing cause.
Virginia Tech shot a blistering 63.0 percent from the floor in the first half and held a 42-40 edge at the intermission.
The Rams limited the Hokies to just 30 points in the second half and hit 14- of-18 free throws to seal the seven-point victory.
Rhode Island forced Virginia Tech into 16 turnovers and scored 24 points off those giveaways in the win.
