Around NL East Spring Training, 3/24: The Quotable Charlie Manuel

Nationals: Stephen Strasburg pitched well in an inter-squad game, his first since being optioned to minor league camp. His final line: 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K...The Nationals resigned last year’s closer, Mike MacDougal, to a minor-league deal. He might not make the team this year, however, which has to be a sign of progress for the Nats...Chien-Ming Wang’s bullpen session today was postponed due to shoulder soreness...SI’s Jon Heyman hinted today on twitter than Ian Desmond had won the starting shortstop job over Cristian Guzman, but Manager Jim Riggleman isn’t saying anything yet.

Braves: John Smoltz is probably going to retire and focus on broadcasting Braves games. Martin Gandy of SBN’s Talking Chop went one-on-one with Jason Heyward for Fox Sports South...Tim Hudson is going to throw against minor leaguers instead of the Phillies on Monday.

Marlins: Uber-prospect Mike Stanton was sent to AA Buffalo...Brett Carroll strained his left oblique; opening day is doubtful.

Mets: Jose Reyes had his first successful workout after returning from doctor-mandated rest related to a thyroid imbalance. His chances of being ready for opening day seem 50/50 at this point. If he misses the Mets’ opener, he would likely be backs soon thereafter, barring a setback...Jon Niese is going to be the Mets’ 5th starter. This move allows Fernando Nieve and HisanoriTakahashi to be used as swingmen out of the bullpen...Former ace Dwight Gooden was arrested for DWI.

Phillies: The Phillies’ pitching staff seems mostly set, with the 5th starter still undetermined...uhhhh...
