Dayton Holds On To Top Illinois 77-71, Advance To Madison Square Garden

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – Chris Johnson turned in 18 points and seven rebounds, as the Dayton Flyers defeated the Illinois Fighting Illini, 77-71, in quarterfinal-round action of the 2010 NIT at Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Marcus Johnson posted 11 points and eight rebounds for Dayton (23-12), while Chris Wright logged 10 points and seven boards. The Flyers now move on to New York City and Madison Square Garden for the semifinals against Ole Miss, which defeated Texas Tech on Tuesday.

Demetri McCamey paced Illinois (21-15) in defeat with a double-double of 13 points and 10 assists. Tyler Griffey tallied 11 points, while Mike Davis and D.J. Richardson chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Dayton used a 20-7 run in the first half to open a 38-25 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Flyers shot 46.2 percent from the floor and made 13 free throws to hang on for the six-point victory.

The Flyers drained 8-of-18 shots from beyond the arc, while the Illini went just 6-of-26 from the same distance.
