2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 7

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Chris Pokorny, lead blogger at SB Nation's Cleveland Browns blog, Dawgs By Nature, checks in to make the seventh overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the seventh overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns have selected Eric Berry, safety, Tennessee.

Chris Pokorny says: Taking a defensive back with a high first-round pick would be a first for the Browns since returning to the league in 1999. When looking at all of the units on the team's roster, the secondary is the one that needed to be addressed the most. It represents one of the few positions that Mike Holmgren has not pursued through free agency, and Rob Ryan will almost certainly be looking to fill two starting spots - one at cornerback and one at safety. As the best-rated safety on the board, Eric Berry has been a clear favorite amongst Browns fans, and would be considered a welcome addition to fill the void left by former starter Brodney Pool, who wasn't re-signed by the team given his history of concussions.

There will be a lot of speculation leading up to the draft that the Browns will be interested in trading up to draft a quarterback in the first round. After all, given the thought of having an aging Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace as your contenders for the starting job doesn't exactly spell out "future." With that said, there should be a few serviceable quarterbacks available in the second or third round. The Browns proved they could win last year in their final four games without a competent quarterback, so I'd rather use our first-rounder to focus on shutting opposing offenses down.

Mocking Dan reacts: This would be a dream scenario for the Browns. Berry is arguably the best defensive player in the draft after Ndamukong Suh. Some needs for the Browns may be as great as safety, but none of them could be filled with a player as good as Berry.

Mocking the Draft’s Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - C.J. Spiller/RB/Clemson, 2 - Derrick Morgan/DE/Georgia Tech, 3 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 4 - Joe Haden/CB/Florida, 5 - Earl Thomas/S/Texas
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Berry-to-Cleveland pick? Please be sure to check out Dawgs By Nature for all of your Browns needs.
