With the trade market for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb apparently heating up, the Oakland Raiders are apparently upping their offer for Philadelphia’s long-time signal-caller. According to ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli, the Raiders are willing to deal All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha for McNabb, while the Eagles are hesitant to make such a deal.
Report: Raiders Offer Cornerback Asomugha For Eagles’ McNabb
On the surface, landing one of the top two or three cornerbacks in his prime for the soon-to-be 34 year-old McNabb would seem to be a coup for the Eagles. The likely sticking point for them, however, is Asomugha’s contract. The Raiders gave Asomugha a very generous contract that will pay him over $16 million in 2010. While the Raiders can trade him without any penalty this offseason due to the looming uncapped year, the Eagles would inherit that contract if they acquired him, and likely wouldn’t want to commit to pay any player that much, even in an uncapped season.
It’s unclear if the Raiders would offer Asomugha in lieu of any draft picks, so it’s still possible Oakland could land McNabb, who may not be as opposed to playing in the Black Hole next season as was originally reported. And the fact that the Raiders are apparently aggressively shopping for a quarterback obviously speaks volumes to their confidence that the disappointing Jamarcus Russell will continue his reputed newfound commitment to conditioning.
