Well, maybe the Milton Bradley debacle wasn’t a complete waste of the Chicago Cubs’ money.
Cubs Make Room For Carlos Silva In Rotation
↵By trading the (choose your favorite PC synonym for “crazy”) Bradley to Seattle, the Cubs got the “big-boned” Carlos Silva, who will now be their fourth or fifth starter. Cubs fans are hoping that Silva has more success than he did with the Mariners, where he had a 6.46 ERA (good for an ERA+ of 66) in 2008 and an 8.60 ERA (51) in 30.1 innings last year.
↵Silva and Tom Gorzelanny will temporarily fill out a rotation that includes the (choose your favorite PC synonym for “angry”) Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Randy Wells, who had a solid campaign last year. Ted Lilly is expected to come back in April, moving Silva or Gorzelanny into the bullpen -- where you could make the case that they’re badly needed.
↵↵[Barring a trade,] the Cubs would open with a bullpen that has three rookies and a fourth pitcher, Samardzija, without a season year in the big leagues.
↵↵Which is exactly what you want if you’re a team that, you know, hasn’t won a World Series in almost 102 years.
