On March 26th, 2000, Seattle’s Kingdome - home of Edgar Martinez, Steve Largent, and the USS Mariner - came down before a national audience. The demolition was the first live event ever covered by ESPN Classic, and it set a world record for the largest structure implosion by volume. Thousands of Seattlites cheered on as the dome’s roof fell to the ground, this time on purpose.
The Kingdome Demolition’s Tenth Anniversary
↵To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Lookout Landing posted an interview with ex-Mariner Jack Perconte, who played in the Kingdome in 1984-85. While many were happy to see the drab gray tomb collapse in on itself, it’s still hard for long-time fans not to feel a twinge of sadness and nostalgia when they reflect on the stadium’s life, as many of Seattle’s greatest sports moments took place within its interior. Or at least one of them did. And people are always inclined to remember the good over the bad.
↵Qwest Field was erected on top of the old Kingdome between 2000-2001, and, much like the team that calls it home, was built using a lot of recycled material.
