NFL Mock Draft, Pick 14: Seahawks Select C.J. Spiller, RB Clemson
Clemson RB C.J. Spiller
They want to win now, and need to win now with one of those two quarterbacks. Hasselbeck has a below average arm that can become a liability when he is injured. He isn’t broken, but his margin of injury is very thin. When he is banged up, the underneath pass becomes his primary weapon. As Whitehurst attempts to overcome his crippling pocket presence, an underneath threat could help him learn to outlet out of pressure.
And Spiller’s ability as a return man shouldn’t be brushed aside. He is the kind of player that can always give his team good field position and be a threat to score a touchdown. Offensive tackle may be as pressing of a need as running back for Seattle. But don’t be shocked when new offensive line coach Alex Gibbs waits until later in the draft to address it.
Pete Carroll had a lot of success with Reggie Bush at USC so I can easily see him taking another explosive runner.
However, I’m not sure I would make this move in the first round. Spiller’s a heck of a talent but running backs are a dime a dozen in the NFL. The value just isn’t there because they’re easily replaceable. I would suggest focusing on that offensive line so any running back can be successful behind them.
As MTD Field Gulls wrote, taking Spiller is a “win-now” type of move and Matt Hasselbeck might be in his last year in Seattle so I can see the logic behind this pick but, personally, don’t agree with it.
