I’m back at it after missing Saturday’s action. Here are some thoughts after reviewing Sunday’s boxscores:
Fantasy Baseball: Sunday’s Spring Training Roundup
Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco dominated the Astros in 7+ innings, limiting them to 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out 2. As I have stated before, he is picking up where he left off in 2010, but he only struck out 2 batters. He was efficient though as he only threw 95 pitches in 7+ innings.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw was also dominant on Sunday as he gave up just one run in 6 innings, giving up 6 hits, walking only one and striking out 7. If Kershaw can bring the walks down, he could enter ace status in 2010.
Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco threw up alot of crooked numbers on Sunday. Good sign-7 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Bad sign-he walked 6 and gave up 4 hits and 5 runs.
Indians outfielder Matt Laporta hit his first spring HR and drove in 5 runs. Teammate Shin Soo Choo had 4 hits and drove in 3 as well. Is this the year Laporta finally see 500+ at bats?
Diamondbacks outfielder Chris Young batted leadoff and went 1-2 with 2 runs scored, with no SBs. But, he did walk 3 times and did not strike out. We usually see him with 3 K’s and no walks, so this is a good sign.
Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez stole his 10th base of the spring. He went for $16 in my NL-only draft on Sunday, but I put my money on another young base stealer instead.
The Red Sox made my Carl Pavano as a sleeper pick look pretty bad on Sunday, as they rocked him for 8 runs on 12 hits in 3.2 innings. Prior to this outing Pavano was pitching lights out.
Victor Martinez went 4-5 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. Could the Red Sox be better offensively and defensively in 2010?
Nationals new shortstop Ian Desmond batted second and showed why he deserved the job by going 2-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and his 5th SB of the spring. Can he go 10-20 in 2010?
Sleeper Alert: I was listening to XM 175 on Friday on my drive home and heard I think Jody Macdonald and Jim Bowden talk about Twins pitching prospect Anthony Slama. Slama could be the Twins closer sometime this season as he is a strikeout machine. In 2007, he struck out 49 batters in 31 innings. In 2008 in A+, he strcuk out 110 in 71 innings with a BAA of .173. In 2009,split between AA and AAA, he struck out 112 in 81 innings with a BAA of just over .200. Baseball America ranks him as the Twins 19th best prospect and says he will open the 2010 season as their AAA closer.
