↵Not to pile on a currently↵leaderless athletic department with delusions of grandeur about its↵basketball coaching search, but... man, how is Jeremiah Masoli (pictured) still on↵Oregon’s football team? He’s flagged down a year-long suspension after↵those Oregon frat boys who reported a theft turned out to be less racist↵than accurate. ↵
What Does It Take For Chip Kelly To Actually Boot A Starter?
↵
↵
↵
↵↵The reason the story shifted radically to “Masoli framed by guys↵in white caps that should be hoods” was Masoli coming out with a↵totally ficticious alibi that he lied to Chip Kelly about to the coach’s face.↵The investigation that ensued saw police announce that neither↵Masoli or the dismissed Garrett Embry were↵even suspects. Kelly took the opportunity to admonish the media to↵“let all the facts come out before you start making↵accusations.”↵
↵↵Bzzt:↵
↵↵⇥↵⇥Masoli pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in the theft of a↵⇥pair of laptops and a guitar from a campus fraternity in late January. A↵⇥plea deal reduced his charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. ...↵⇥
↵⇥↵⇥Both were sentenced to 12 months of probation and 140 hours of↵⇥community service. Together they must also pay $5,000 restitution.↵⇥
↵↵↵The Eugene police department has now released↵an extensive document detailing their investigation and Masoli’s↵fruitless attempts to escape it by lying expansively. This is trouble↵worth of serious repercussions. How serious? ↵
↵
↵There's a recent precedent of interest: Michigan State players Oren↵Wilson and Myles White lied to Mark Dantonio about their involvement in↵the Spartans' 15-player posse roundup and engineer beatdown and played↵in the Alamo Bowl that 13 guys were suspended from. Both had minimal↵roles in the beatdown. Neither↵got jail time, unlike most of the dismissed players and one guy who's↵hanging on by the skin of his teeth. Both are now looking↵to transfer, which you should read as "are kicked off the↵team."↵
↵↵White wasn’t much when it came to the two-deep and had been in↵trouble before, but Wilson was a two-year starter at nose tackle with no↵prior issues returning for his senior season. His situation is directly↵analogous to Masoli except Wilson didn’t have to rely on a generous↵prosecutor to reduce his crime from a felony to a misdemeanor. Wilson’s↵gone. Masoli might↵participate in spring practice.↵
↵↵It’s not news that this is something of a trend, with LeGarrette↵“Falcon Punch” Blount’s season-long suspension, eventual↵reinstatement, and sporadic touchdowns morphing into a feel good story↵as the Ducks picked themselves up from their dismal season-opening↵defeat against Boise State and drove to their first Rose Bowl in↵forever. That generosity appears to be something current Duck players↵are taking↵advantage of. Mark Dantonio did all he could in the hopes of sending↵his players a message; it appears Kelly did all he had to and now hopes↵Oregon players don’t get the message.↵
