After a 26-7 season ended with a loss to Butler in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, UTEP lost its head coach Tony Barbee to the Auburn Tigers. They wasted no time in finding his replacement. UTEP will introduce Tim Floyd as their new head coach on Friday, according to multiple sources. Floyd spent eight years at UTEP as an assistant under Don Haskins from 1978-86.
Tim Floyd Returns To College Ranks As New UTEP Head Coach
Floyd is one year removed from resigning from USC amid accusations of paying an associate of OJ Mayo $1000 during his recruitment. The NCAA has yet to give a ruling on the case, but any punishment they bestow will not affect Floyd’s new position at UTEP.
Despite the allegations, Floyd was very successful in his four years at USC, going 85-50 while winning the Pac-10 regular season title and conference tournament in his final year. He has spent the last year working as an assistant coach with the New Orleans Hornets.
UTEP is expected to return most of their core players, with the exception of center Derrick Caracter who declared for the NBA draft yesterday.
