Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Patrice Bergeron’s goal with 18.3 seconds left in overtime sent Boston over New Jersey, 1-0, at Prudential Center.

With time winding down in the extra session, Mark Stuart gained control of a loose puck in the slot and unloaded a shot from the right circle. The puck hit Mark Recchi in front and slid to Bergeron, who tucked it into the open net.

Tuukka Rask notched his fifth shutout of the season with 21 saves for the Bruins, who have won four of six and pulled into a tie with idle Philadelphia and Montreal for sixth place in the East. All three teams have 82 points.

Boston also maintained its two-point lead over ninth-place Atlanta, which beat Toronto.

Martin Brodeur stopped 33 shots in defeat for the Devils, who remained one point behind Atlantic-leading Pittsburgh after their fifth loss in seven outings.

Through two scoreless periods, Brodeur was strong with 22 stops while Rask had it easier with 11 saves.

Both sides failed to convert on two power plays apiece in the third period, and a Michael Ryder shot from 30 feet inside the final five seconds of regulation was thwarted by an alert Brodeur.

Bergeron hadn’t notched a game-winning goal since December 21 at Ottawa...New Jersey won three of four in the season series...The Devils fell to 1-2 this season in games which have ended by a 1-0 score, while the Bruins improved to 1-2 in such games.
