Around AL West Spring Training, 3/31: Life Without Kinsler, For A Little Bit

Mariners: Busy time for the M’s right now. Cliff Lee threw a little bit Wednesday morning and felt better. No timetable on his return, but he didn’t feel any discomfort while throwing, which is a positive...Luke French has been optioned to AAA Tacoma, where he will work on developing further in the rotation. The likelihood, then, is that the M’s either give a bullpen spot to Garret Olson, Jesus Colome, or Chad Cordero, or they’ll go outside the organization for an arm...Ryan Garko was placed on waivers as the Mariners have elected to keep Mike Sweeney. Garko had options remaining, which makes this a curious move. Sweeney is currently not on the 40-man roster...Jack Hannahan does not have a sports hernia, and should be able to return to baseball activities shortly. In the meantime, until Hannahan is ready, Matt Tuiasosopo appears to be the favorite to break camp as the utility infielder...Lisa Winston takes a look at the top prospects in Seattle’s system...Erik Bedard is going on the 15-day DL and looks to return sometime in May.

Athletics: Jason Jennings and Steve Tolleson were cut from big league camp...Cliff Pennington looks like the probable regular shortstop. Bob Geren won’t admit as much, but Pennington has the edge over Adam Rosales...Lisa Winston takes a look at the top prospects in Oakland’s system.

Angels: Lisa Winston takes a look at the top prospects in LAnaheim’s system...Sean O’Sullivan was optioned to AAA Salt Lake...Scott Kazmir came back from shoulder soreness to throw an effective, incident-free five innings on Tuesday.

Rangers: Lisa Winston takes a look at the top prospects in Texas’ system...the Rangers are preparing for Ian Kinsler to begin the season the disabled list...Texas is trying to work out a deal with San Francisco that would allow them to keep Rule 5 pick Ben Snyder in the minors...Darren O’Day, dealing with a bone bruise in his elbow, threw a pain-free bullpen on Tuesday...the team will consider Kevin Millar and Ryan Garko as righty backup first basemen, but there’s no indication that they’ll go out and sign either...Colby Lewis tossed 7.1 sparking innings Tuesday, and now has 16 strikeouts and three walks in the spring.
