The Brewers renewed the contract of likely Opening Day starter Yovani Gallardo Thursday morning, according to Adam McCalvy. Gallardo was the last remaining unsigned player on the 40-man roster entering Cactus League play today.
Brewers Renew Yovani Gallardo’s Contract, May Not Want To Think About Next Year’s Arbitration
This was the second straight season where Gallardo has been the Brewers' last unsigned player; he agreed to a contract just before the deadline last season. He becomes the first player the Brewers have had to renew since 2008, when Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart were all renewed.
Perhaps more importantly, though, the fact that Gallardo and his agent (former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt) have had a hard time coming to terms with the team in zero-leverage situations probably doesn’t bode well for the two sides’ ability to avoid arbitration when Gallardo is eligible for the first time following the season. Gallardo joins this list of 2011 arbitration-eligible Brewers that might cause the front office some sleepless nights:
- Prince Fielder, who will be eligible for the third and final time after earning $11 million in 2010.
- Corey Hart, also in his third year, earning $4.8 million.
- Rickie Weeks, in his third year, earning $2.75 million
- Todd Coffey, in his third year, earning $2.025 million.
- Carlos Gomez and Carlos Villanueva, both eligible for the second time.
- Manny Parra, who will also be eligible for the first time.
