Penguins Fans Want To Bench Fleury?

You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. And some people are just ignorant.

↵Beginning during the Olympic break, some fans in Pittsburgh began a mini-backlash against Marc-Andre Fleury. It came to a head Thursday night on a local call-in sports television show when callers were out in full force against Fleury. The Nightly Sports Call had callers asking for Fleury to take a seat on the bench and one went as far as to ask “What has he ever won?” and “Do you really think this team can with with Fleury?”

↵You know - the guy with back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, a Stanley Cup and an Olympic team selection - what’s he ever won? The hosts reacted as you’d expect - they were incredulous.

↵Disbelief was not enough for one member of the Pittsburgh media. By Friday morning, local radio host and sportswriter Ron Cook had heard enough. Cook used his show on 93.7 The Fan as a platform to lay into the portion of the fanbase that has been murmuring about a goaltending change. His rant fired up his listeners and most of them rallied to Fleury’s defense and trashed the vocal minority calling for a new goaltender. Check out the fan poll on The Fan homepage for a glimpse into the general fan reaction.

↵As Pittsburgh is and probably always will be a football town, the Ben Roethlisberger news immediately kicked the Fleury debate to the backburner where it will likely stay for awhile. Remember this the next time you’re at a game and the guy behind you says something mind-bogglingly ignorant. Whatever he says can’t be THAT bad. I mean, there are hockey fans in Pittsburgh that can’t figure out what Marc-Andre Fleury has won.
